My Rating: 4 Stars Loved it! A great page-turner, filled with suspense that will you addicted until the last page. The 1920's with jazz, gangsters and murders is the perfect cocktail for a great reading! At each event, you'll dive deeper and deeper into the story and when you think you got everything figured out, you're in for a surprise. It's the first book I read from A.M. Dunnewin and I absolutely loved it. The way she describes a cold-night in New York was the only thing I needed to get into the story and later on, the intriguing plot that kept destroying my theories. I highly recommend this book to mystery/thriller/suspense lovers. The 5 stars are definitely well deserved and I can't way to see more of Ms Dunnewin! Thank you NetGalley, the publisher Dark Hour Press, and the author for allowing me to read and review a digital copy of this book.

My Rating: 4 Stars I received this book before and I didn't read immediately, that a bad decision that was. I read this book in 4 days and highly enjoyed it. The story of a detective and his partner set out to hunt a group of three individuals that kidnap, rape and kill innocent young women. If they took someone you hold dear to you, would you put the law aside and make your own justice? A very thrilling novel packed with action with the main character, Detective Jason Coulter running against time to find his girlfriend knowing that her fate is the same as all the other victims before her. I have mixed feelings for the main character. It's very easy to slip into his shoes when it comes to the question of 'what would you do if it happened to you'. His determination, dedication and his willingness to go beyond the rules to make justice make him a fierce adversary. Those bad guys better watch out! I liked seeing the partnership between Coulter and his partner Dave, especially because they are, in terms of character, different but still compliment each other very well. You can definitely see the friendship and the loyalty between them. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the humour in this book because it balances really well the very serious scenarios of the novel. I can definitely see the old-school humour and I absolutely loved it! John Levitt did an amazing job! I definitely recommend this book especially for the fans of action-thriller novels! My Rating: 4 Stars Liss Ruskin is eager for the annual Moosetookalook Highland Games, but the excitement is quickly replaced with worry and fear. When a fire breaks out at the bookstore where, in the same building, Liss's friends and their children that live a floor above are put in grave danger. Things get even worse when no bodies are found. Liss attends the games in hopes of a distraction from her worries, but things keep going down hill when a gunshot is heard and body of loathed Jason Graye is found at his house. Are the crimes related? I really enjoyed this book. The way it is writing and the great plot instigate curiosity and thrill. It definitely worth reading! Thank you NetGalley, the publisher Kensington, and the author for allowing me to read and review a digital copy of this book. My Rating: 5 Stars Absolutely marvellous! I'm an absolute fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories and so when I saw this title I was a bit redundant to read it. I had no idea what was waiting for me but I decided to take a chance. And it was a correct one to make! Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell, I'm quite pleased to say is definitely worth reading, with a style of writing that brings one hell of an adventure! Holmes isn't the same person after defeating his archenemy, Professor Moriarty. Cases aren't challenging or intriguing anymore and Holmes is in an unpleasant and irritable mood. Dr Watson is concerned, especially considering the recurrent use of drugs of his dear friend when finding in a state of boredom. Then a missing person case comes in. A man went inside his attic room, locked the door on in inside, and disappeared. As Holmes and Watson take the case, another missing person case occurs exactly in exactly the same pattern. Are the cases connected? How so? While investigating these two cases, Holmes and Watson discover a secret society that indulges carnal pleasures and hides a mysterious box. How is it all related? Kane connects perfectly the original Sherlock Holmes stories showing a deep knowledge and understanding of the complex character that is Sherlock Holmes, providing the perspectives of both Watson and Holmes. Furthermore, the book is writing in the style of Arthur Conan Doyle, and I must say he would be proud! Thrilling story, a very good book! My Rating: 4 Stars When the Owl Sings centres around Mason Rhimes, a journalist in the 21st century the US, whose dreams are linked to an ancient Maya civilisation. After having time-off his work, still recovering from the death of his fiance, Mason starts a journey of self-discovery and full of mysterious events that torture him nightly. His thrilling journey takes him to a small town that not everything or everyone is what it seems, learning that the curse he has been trying to hide might be the only way to have the country. There are three different perspectives in the book that complete this plot. The reader is taken on a journey through a world that isn't always open to the things that aren't physical or logically explained. The tone of this book reflects the rocking path of discovering and accepting the darkest parts of yourself by going deep inside your heart and by reaching out to other people. The struggle of the main character throughout the narrative is deep and truly shows how people deal with the ups and downs of life differently. The title has very well chosen for this narrative. It's an essential part of the understanding of the old Mayan civilisation and its beliefs but also a very creative way to show that what goes around, comes around. The book is well written and the depth of the knowledge in criminal mind, the spiritual and the dream world, and the understanding of the human psychology is outstanding. I particularly appreciated the detailed description of the meaning of the dreams, which ties up perfectly with the rest of the events. I could definitely relate to the pain caused by death can bring a type of wisdom that allows people to change, appreciate life more knowing that time is limited and should be used wisely. All in all, it's a clever and refreshing debut and I can't wait to see that comes next from Maloney. Thank you NetGalley, the publisher Two Harbors Press, and the author for allowing me to read and review a digital copy of this book. My Rating: 5 Stars Definitely a Hell of a different reading but not by all means disappointing. I always thought of Hell as the traditional "place of misery and punishment for your sins" like Dante's Inferno, but in this story, Hell becomes something else entirely. Several brutal murders happen in a place where they're common and everyone is guilty of something? Very well thought, with a great in-depth to the main character and amazing plot twits. It's impossible not to like Thomas Fool and to really think over if we really are in control of our choices and our path in life. Is it us or someone else? In Fool's case "Is it my choice or Hell just making me think I have a choice? Is free an illusion in hell and if yes, who creates it?" This phrase isn't in the book, it's just one of the many questions Thomas Fool tries to answer and understand while looking for the responsible for all the brutal murders. Different, macabre, but I loved every page. My Rating: 5 Stars I might be a bit macabre, but the fact that in this book there is more than one murder was a very nice surprise. The plot starts in an unusual way since Poirot is actually contacted by the murderer before the crime actually takes place, creating a very nice atmosphere of "catch me if you can". The twists and turns in this book made it impossible for me to guess who was the killer until the end and Poirot's slowly building suspense will keep the reader considering every character as a possible suspect. Who can you really trust in this story? You'll have to read to find out! My Rating: 5 Stars I read two books of Stephen King before this one, "The Shining" and "Carrie". In this book, Stephen King takes horror to a different level, going more for the thriller/crime genre. A quick summary: In the city of Midwestern, people are lining up for a job fair when someone driving a Mercedes starts running over people in a non-stop rampage before he escapes without a trace. Months later, a retired cop haunted by the unsolved case is brought back into action after receiving a note from the killer threatening another attack. Will he be able to stop him before another massacre takes place? I couldn't top the book down. The story is described both by Bill Hodges, the cop, and Brady Hartfield, the killer giving the perfect balanced perspective of two sides of the same coin, good and evil. As always Stephen King creates and masters the characters beautifully, inserting them in an environment that shows perfectly the repercussions of the economical crisis in people's lives and behaviours. A great read! My Rating: 4 Stars Agatha Christie never disappoints. A great mystery novel was written a bit differently than the usual style of Poirot but still very much worth reading. Unfortunately for Poirot, this plot requires a lot of physical activity and not just his little grey cells! As usual, the pace of the book is great and with a few unexpected twists and surprises but I could keep up with them with no problems at all. My Rating: 5 Stars This was the first I read from Agatha Christie when I was in high school. I re-read it again years later and my opinion is the same: I absolutely love this book. It's not the usual style that Christie usually uses, but she managed to mix secret societies, espionage, romance and murder can come up with the perfect cocktail for a memorable story. The heroine of the book is not the usual woman of the time, proving, again and again, her courage, intelligence and will to break all rules to do the right thing. Plus, with her witty character, I found it impossible not to like her. What I identified in this plot is a description of the English society and stereotypical characters that bring humour and colour to this amazing adventure. |
